Wells-next-the-Sea in the heart of North Norfolk enjoys a traditional summer Carnival for residents and visitors. A week of family fun and events culminates in a Carnival Day procession around the town featuring floats, fancy-dress, pull-and push-along vehicles and much more. Traditional seaside activities include a sand-castle competition, town crier competition, gillying on the quay and the crowning of the Carnival Queen.
The Carnival is entirely run by a group of volunteers whose aim is three fold.
- Firstly: to put on a week of fun for local people and holidaymakers. To achieve this we rely heavily on sponsorship.
- Secondly: to promote Wells-next-the-Sea so that people return not just in the main season but at quieter times which should be to the benefit of local businesses.
- Thirdly: but by no means less important, we aim to support local charities and good causes within our community by donating the money collected on Carnival day and any surplus we have in our funds.
We are always eager to recruit volunteers to help us out during the Carnival Week. If you are interested in being involved, we meet on the second Tuesday of every month at the Edinburgh Hotel at 7.30 p.m, or you can contact us via email and we will get back to you.
Organisation is well underway for this year's Carnival which takes place in August. The programme for 2008 looks to be jam packed full of activities and entertainment which we hope everybody will enjoy.
You do not need to be a committee member to become involved. We are particularly looking for people who can give a few hours of their time during the week to either set up or pack away after an event, take a turn on a rota basis at some of the Carnival stalls, help deal with traffic situations or are willing to pick up a sack at the end of an event and help clear the litter away. Carnival has grown over the past years and therefore more help is needed if we are to maintain the standard that we currently enjoy. |
