It is with a heavy heart that the directors and committee members of Wells Carnival have decided that we have no alternative but to cancel Wells Carnival 2020. This is not a decision we have taken lightly, but feel in the current climate, it is the right decision. The safety of all our local residents, visitors, entertainers and volunteers is of paramount importance.

As many will be aware the committee start planning for Wells Carnival at least 12 months in advance. Bookings & deposits have already been paid, with balances due in the coming weeks & months. In addition we may be required to pay cancellation fees if we delayed the decision any further. As there is no guarantee the restriction of travel & gathering of large crowds will be lifted by August we need to minimise any further loses, so by taking the decision at this stage, will ensure we have funds remaining to carry forward for 2021.

In addition we annually rely on sponsorship & donations from many of our local businesses and in this financially challenging situation feel it would be remiss of us to request any support for this year.

Rest assured all stall holders, who have paid in advance, will be reimbursed in full and hopefully the majority of the programme we have worked on for this year can be carried forward to 2021.

Wells Carnival, in various forms, has been running for well over 100 years and the Directors and Committee are thankful for the support received from everyone – locals, holiday makers and businesses alike. We hope you will support and understand our decision and wish to reassure you that, as Mr Schwarzenegger so eloquently put it, ‘WE WILL BE BACK’
In the meantime Crew members are keeping busy providing craft packs for children in Wells, which we hope to continue with for the duration. We are also assisting the town by providing additional support, where needed. There are numerous suggestions, being added daily, for keeping the youngsters, and not so young, entertained on our fb page, and we welcome any photos of your creations etc

We wish to thank all the Key Workers of Wells, and further afield, for looking after us all – Wells Carnival 2021 will most definitely be in your honour – and to everyone else please make sure you stay at home, look after yourselves and stay safe.

What’s it all about

Wells-next-the-Sea in the heart of North Norfolk enjoys a traditional summer Carnival for residents and visitors. A week of family fun and events including a Carnival Day procession around the town featuring floats, fancy-dress, pull-and push-along vehicles and much more. Traditional seaside activities include a sand-castle competition, town crier competition, gillying on the quay and the crowning of the Carnival Royals.

A bit of history …

Wells Carnival is a not-for-profit organisation run by a team of hardworking volunteers who live in or near the town of Wells-next-the-Sea, on the beautiful North Norfolk coast. The event has been taking place annually at the beginning of August for well over 90 years. The Carnival, which was originally known as the Wells Regatta was just a one day event and the earliest programme we have is for Saturday 24th July, 1926 (unless you have an earlier one). Over the years the event has grown and the carnival committee ‘Crew’ (they wear the fuchsia pink T.shirts) now organise more than 100 events over the 10 days of Carnival.

We endeavour to provide entertainment for all ages: a teddy bears picnic for the little ones, raft race and funrun for the energetic plus painting and sandcastle competitions for the artistic. We also put on history walks and various workshops plus live music over 6 nights along with the ever popular Screen on the Green. The event culminates on the 2nd Saturday with the main Carnival event, including fancy dress competitions, a parade around the town and a spectacular music event in the evening.
